Practical biology: plant cloning
Year 13 biology students recently got the chance to get their hands dirty with some practical biology.
The students are focusing on biotechnology, to demonstrate this in real life, did some plant cloning. At first they looked at different plants, then took cuttings and potted them up. In the process, they were able to apply key concepts of the biology course to their work, discussing photosynthesis, biodiversity and classification.
There was even a moment to learn about ecosystems, pests and diseases when an insect infestation was found on one of the plants - this led to a discussion about plant hormones and nutrition.
With their interest piqued in the cloning houseplants, students got to take their cuttings home and even give them as presents - all while improving the health and look of the plants which populate the school's biology lab and staff room!
