What We Offer
Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science Support
Many of our students are looking to pursue careers as doctors, dentists and vets, and we have a long and successful track record of supporting these students to fulfil their ambitions. The required A Level subjects for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine degrees are Chemistry and one other science. Very often this has to be Biology, but not always. For example, Oxford or Cambridge Medicine require Chemistry and either Biology or Maths or Physics.
Maths A Level is not a required subject for Medicine.
In fact, swapping Maths for a non-science A Level subject makes students stronger applicants. This is because of the skills needed in the interviews and in the relevant university admissions tests (BMAT & UCAT). Geography, History or languages A Levels are an excellent choice in this regard. Empathy is the key skill that is needed at interview: Philosophy and English Literature are therefore also very strong A Levels to consider.
We do this with our specialist MDV Programme.
In Year 12, the focus is on making sure that students can find the right course for them, are well-informed, and supported to find work experience and/or summer school placements. Preparation for admissions tests also begins.
In Year 13, we advise our students on how to write brilliant personal statements and place great emphasis on interview preparation and practice.
In terms of success:
- Over 80% of students who apply receive university offers for MDV courses.
- Since 2016 over 220 alumni have moved on to study MDV courses, including at Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial College and King's College.
