The A Team - from top grades to top universities

The A Team: record results at the State Sixth Form of the Year

A record number of students at LAE in East London achieved the very best grades needed to secure places at the UK’s top universities including Oxford and Cambridge.

Students at London Academy of Excellence, The Sunday Times State Sixth Form of the Year, were celebrating today having achieved the best set of results since the Free School, in Newham, opened in 2012:

  • Half of all grades were A*/A
  • 86% of all grades were A*-B
  • More than 100 students secured their Russell Group university places
  • Six students are going to Oxford and Cambridge colleges

Today, the anxious wait came to an end as the Class of 2016 at London Academy of Excellence, Stratford, received their A level exam results, hopefully the results they needed to gain a place at one of the country’s top universities.

Half of all grades were A* or A, so it should come as no surprise that many students achieved the straight A grades required to secure a place at one of the country’s top Russell Group universities. One such student, Reiss, achieved two A* grades and one A grade – the tough target set by Cambridge University. Reiss was one of six students to gain a place at an Oxford or Cambridge college this year, again another record for LAE.

Having just found out he’d secured a place at Cambridge University to read English, Reiss Akhtar, 18, had this to say about his aspirations:

“The support we received from our teachers was incredible. I only saw Oxford and Cambridge as an impossible dream, but since joining LAE the idea of applying to the top universities had been 'normalised'.”

Reiss is one of many students from Newham who attended a local secondary school (Kingsford Community School) before joining LAE to do his A levels, and, like many others, the first in his family to go to university.

Quote from John Weeks, Head Master:

“Our stellar results today, half of the grades were either A* or A, are a cause for real celebration. Most important though is the realisation of dreams and ambitions which lay behind the statistics. Our Sixth Formers set extremely high targets for themselves and securing them has required a lot of hard work.

I am particularly delighted that so many of our students who joined us from Newham secondary schools have secured places at Russell Group universities including Reiss and Supti, from Kingsford and Cumberland, who are going to Cambridge and Oxford. Education in Newham at Secondary and Sixth Form level is clearly flourishing, and I am proud that LAE is playing a leading role in this.”

Quote from Barnaby Lenon, LAE Chair of Governors and former Head Master of Harrow School:

“We are very grateful to the staff from the six top independent schools who have provided assistance to LAE over the past four years; their experience and wisdom has contributed to our success.”

LAE’s close relationship with a number of the country’s top independent schools enables its sixth formers to benefit from experiences they would never have expected. These unique partnerships help support the academic achievement, aspirational opportunities, enriching experiences, and personal development of all students at LAE: this is ‘The LAE Experience.’

London Academy of Excellence (LAE) is an academically-focused and high-achieving sixth form in Stratford, East London, located right next to the station and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
